Reims (in progress)
(updated 22/7/14)
Most of this page derives from the work done by Carey (see the bibliography).
According to Carey’s definition, 'Reims' includes the cathedral chapter of Reims; the monasteries of St Remi and St Thierry; and the monasteries of St Denis, St Nicaise and Hautvillers.
'Nothing is known of a Reims scriptorium before the ninth century': R. McKitterick, 'Knowledge of canon law in the Frankish kingdoms before 789: the manuscript evidence', Journal of Theological Studies 36 (1985), 97–117, at 109.
Many Reims MS are identified based on their illustrations rather than their script.

Script
Carey, p. 48: 'The script of Reims in the Hincmarian period is distinguished by its very traitlessness. There is no hierarchy of scripts like that which is found in manuscripts of Tours… There is a tendency towards the elimination of uncials… The form of small letter a is practically always of the small uncial type, the loop generally making a fairly large belly. The two loops of the letter g are usually open, the letter itself often being connected to the following letter by a stroke. Ligatures, except for et, do not occur commonly… The ligature for st is found more often than those for ct, nt, and rt. Figure 2 is often used as the abbreviation for –ur; the apostrophe occurs in only one manuscript of the group, Reims 434… which is perhaps to be dated earlier than this period on other grounds. There are occasional abbreviations for –bunt, –runt, sunt, in the form of bt, rt, st, with a suprascript line. The letters are usually carefully formed and stand fairly straight. There is a tendency towards clubbing, but not the artificial type which was practised in the tenth century.'
