Leeds IMC Call for Papers: Continuing the Study of Caroline Minuscule: Feasting on Variation, not Starved by Uniformity.
After the success of the amazing papers from our session this year at the 2015 Leeds Medieval Congress, the Network for the Study of Caroline Minuscule is very pleased to be sponsoring a 2016 session on this most influential and continually engaging script. Papers focusing on any aspect of Caroline Minuscule will be accepted; particularly welcome are discussions that engage with our ongoing project to map the regional variations of Caroline Minuscule, localising and differentiating where a script that is sometimes regarded as blandly consistent has changed and adapted. Discussion of local variation would demonstrate that, quite the opposite, there is a great deal of fruitful discussion yet to be had about the ongoing developments of what might rightly be called a series of parallel ‘Caroline minuscules’. We accept palaeographical discussion of any unusual or noteworthy manuscripts, or any new variations in form or layout that have come to light from whatever direction these manuscripts might be approached. Also discussion of features beyond the script itself would be fascinating: the codicology of manuscripts and its relationship with minuscule, discussion on marginal notes, signs or any apparatus that interact with script. Any paper that engages with the script from a new perspective would elicit interesting discussion; this could involve a comparison with another script directly related or completely distinct from Caroline minuscule, or a discussion of the advantages of new techniques such as the employment of digital history for the general examination of Caroline Minuscule in all contexts. With the publishing of resources such as the final volume Bischoff’s Katalog in the last few years, there is also scope to look back on the history of the study of Caroline Minuscule, and see what lessons and new directions might come to light. A wide time scale is encouraged, and discussion is thus allowed from any point in the history of Caroline Minuscule from c.800–1500.
Talks should be not in excess of 20 minutes, with some time for questions and discussion. Those interested are warmly encouraged to send:
-Name/affiliation/position.
-A basic 100 word abstract (certainly there will be time to refine the scope of the talks before the Congress).
-A note of any equipment required.
to: carolineminuscule[at]gmail.com
by the 26th September, which would allow some time to organise before submitting an application to Leeds IMC.
